Let’s take it one step at a time, methodically. What do you feel when you hear the word “vacation”? A time away from your world? A time visiting the “real you”? How about something you need to earn, and is only gained through hard work and dedication?

I’m the kind of guy who believes a vacation can’t be given to somebody. Even if any of my friends offered time away when I work from home anyway, I would feel the need to push myself to the limits to allow myself the luxury afterward. Financially? Morally, more like. We’ve been groomed into a strange rhythm where we always need to be getting something done. Always need to be improving, never stopping, pushing, and pushing, until we collapse.

I’m not alone in this weird game of destructive hyperactivity, and neither are you. I’ve had to develop a set of tools to get my own work done every day, and need to frequently revisit them to reinvent them. They don’t work every day when you’re supposed to be somebody new every day. It’s kind of ridiculous. Sometimes I wonder if I was supposed to be drinking espresso since birth or if I just became this way.

But what’s the point of earning a vacation when you start each day with an ever-expanding quota? That same vacation just becomes a stop gap for your progress and breaks you down the second you get back, right?

Our ambitions mix with our beliefs and all of a sudden we’re not doing enough for the near-invisible forces that comprise our living world. It’s a lot to take in, and even more to live with. When you’re feeling down about these hard aspects of life, try to have fun with it in any ways you can. Share a smile, shed a tear, and live. Sometimes, that’s all we can do.

Firelight

Dripping down the sweat
Couldn’t get
With a guitar

Slip it down the sluice
Gotta juice
Feeling better

Hold me tight
Out of sight
Let nobody know it’s you and me

Can we just
Get it right
Concentrate on your philosophy

Can’t get a grip
Take a sip
Shoot a gutter-ball

Take a little trip
Down the rip
I’m a wonder-wall

And it’s fine to feel your way through fantasy
When we make it out alright, it’s you and me
Can you feel it in the air
When you leave, remember where
From the smoke into the sky
You remain a firelight

Just let go
You don’t need to know
Throw your fire to and fro
Enjoy the show
