How about that independence! I’m moving back home while looking for a place to live. Do those two sound like opposites? It’s a bit hard on the independence, but I’ll weather the storm with the assistance of family! This housing bubble’s going to pop soon!

Cradle Up a Tree

Tell me a story of the man I’ll be
Is the cat in the cradle
Is he stuck up a tree

The night’s lyin’ young and I hardly can see
Where I’ve been all my life
Come a-settin’ me free

The paint’s peelin’ off like the wind in a flute
The window’s a canon waitin’ up for a shoot
Trees looking thinner than a home-schooled man
Rev up the camper van

Can I ask you why
Can I ask you when
Will come my way
And maybe be my friend

Could I turn to you
When the lights go out
Will you sing to me
When it all goes south

Guess I wonder what we’re after when the sun goes down
The music’s just another kind of noise in the sound
We were never driven like our dads would like
They’d tell us, baby, take a hike

Tell me a story of the apple tree
Did he fall far away
Or was he rolling free

Did he drop his long roots or draw a line in the sand
Was he plucked along the way by an old school band

Hope to god or what can listen, give me more of me
I’ll drop to pray so often ’til I’m hard in the knee
Despite unwilling anchor, I’m a long lost soul
The years get to take a toll

The apple took root on a rock in space
How’d he get up there, to that far-off place
He never wished for now, he never thought for then
He’s turning in the towel, soon he’ll roll again

Drowning in the mountain may look good to me
But he’s just an apple tree
Even if he kind of looks like me

Afterword for After-Heards

I can’t help but love writing pieces like this one, with a similar topic but a different approach. I’m glad with how this one came out. What a fun folk song to write!

I hope you have a great day, and hey– stay hydrated. It’s a hot one!
