I knew her once
A woman fair
With knot-brown eyes
And curly hair
She took me down
She stole my care
I knew her once
She left me there
Is it an issue of my innocence
My ill-begotten smile
Am I too meek when I turn my cheek for any imbecile
How could I miss you when in my defense
I throw away my clue
For every wound you worry, I’m fretting what to do
It’s in the sand
It’s in the stone
It’s in the broken parts of every heart you own
It’s in your hands
It’s all you know
It’s in the trail of tears for every cheer you’ve thrown
These surly eyes won’t demonize the lonely
My works of art won’t tear apart your sin
The heartache won’t depart when you’re my only
How masterful my hopes run down my chin
It’s just a lullaby, a dreamer’s cry
A sillies’ sodden song
When all is done, and love has won
I know I’ll prove me wrong
‘Cause in the end, I’m my best friend
I wish to say the same of you
But I know it won’t be anything new
If only you could help me paint you too
