Have you ever wondered what a story would be like if one of the characters were self-aware? All too often in classic slasher fashion, we’ll grip our seats while the unlikely survivor makes misguided choices. “Oh, of course they ran into the corn maze. He has a machete! It’s made for hacking plants, and you just led him home!”
What if a classic romance protagonist had that kind of understanding, but did little to change his path? You’d have an indie musician! “Oh, woe is me, I guess I’d better play dead and cast away my agency…” I love waxing on these proposed plots. Is it addicting? Almost! Here’s a little something I threw together, just for you.
Second First
Plot a course like a murder-marriage
We’ll fly away in an open carriage
Tragedy makes lovers free
Our families can’t see the damage
Sew your name in my napkin lately?
I’ll think of you when all my brothers hate me
Wasn’t me, like they’ll believe
SOS I’ll whisper, happy
The silver lining can’t compare
To our discretion
A secret sanctuary there
In our make-out sessions
In case of beer, break a glass to journeys
I’ll shout your name in case the world misheard me
You can be dynamically
The chaser knows his goals were dirty
Run away with your youth on fire
Ask your mother “can he stand beside her”
Stopping bleeds our fantasy
And in the end we’ll both expire
