Folk songs tell it best! Got one for you here: “Runs in Red” sings of a woman far away, coming back only to make strong men quake.

She’s a heart-breaker, and knows when to quit. She’ll never speak her purpose to the men she once knew, and they’ll never know her well enough. Let’s hope we never meet her. She could be anywhere…

Runs in Red

Well, the woman, she runs in red
She stole the cherry bones when telling stories to the dead
For any manner of a kind
She’d never tell you that she’s mine
But I’ve been pulling her along before your time

Hey, the cliffside knew no few
But they’d get sorely well acquainted ‘fore the night would meet the dew
She’d chase ’em off alone
She’d holler ugly tones
About the mornings they’d wake up thinking ’bout you

Because the missionary style
Her ill religion takes it’s toll
But it don’t sound off for a while
And she don’t fill her greedy bowl
Forever yanking on a chain
But not for some commercial gain
And she’ll be laughing with the devil’s yellow smile

And these shackles fall for three
An evil man would understand the one
Who came around ‘fore me
But when I’m lost and old
A story told
I’ll huddle in the gravel at your feet
